What is a UTV or Side x Side - SxS

A common question many riders ask about these off road buggies is, what exactly is a UTV or Side-by-Side. Well, long story short, UTV and Side x Side pretty much fall into the same category and are generally considered multi person vehicles. However, variables to this definition are considered.

What does UTV Stand For?

UTV stands for Utility Terrain Vehicle or Utility Task Vehicle. Additionally, more obscure names used are ROV or more widely and accurately used ROHV Recreational Off highway Vehicle, since ROV also stands for Remote Operated Vehicle. Today, the more common, and now widely used and accepted name is, Side x Side, "Side by Side" (SxS).

UTV's are similar to ATVs or All-Terrain Vehicles but are typically larger, use a steering wheel and foot pedals for the break and gas instead of handlebars, can carry passengers, may offer expanded payload hauling capacity, and may have seat belts and roll over cage protection.

What Does Side x Side or SxS Stand For?

The side-by-side (often written as SxS) is a small 2- to 6-person four-wheel drive off-road vehicle, also called UTV (utility terrain vehicle or utility task vehicle), a ROHV (recreational off-highway vehicle), or a MOHUV (multipurpose off-highway utility vehicle)

The Side by Side (SxS) term comes from the design style where two people sit side by side like in a car. There's a driver, with a passenger and sometimes seating for two or more passengers in the back. Some UTV's are not true side by sides and in a way, are more like an ATV allowing only one person on-board but still considered a UTV featuring side by side characteristics like the steering wheel, roll over protection, and payload hauling features.

UTVs these days are better known as side-by-sides. They make up one of the hottest segments in powersports. Our guide lists side-by-side vehicle manufacturers in alphabetic order, and offers links to downloadable service and repair manuals. Side x Side styles include sport, sport-utility, utility, trail legal (50-inch), mid-size, full-size, commercial, multi-passenger and even Lightweight Tactical All Terrain Vehicles, often used by the military.

UTV type vehicles are often seen on golf courses (think Kawasaki Mule), hunters and farmers widely use them and yes, even UTV racing is quite popular.
