History: Argosy Motorhomes by Airstream

Beginning in 1974, parent company "Airstream" began manufacturing a Class A motorhome, badged “Argosy”. These began as painted aluminum 20 and 24-foot models, and later added 26 and 28-foot models.

Argosy motorhomes utilized the same body construction as the trailers, but were built to be mounted on a Chevrolet P32 Truck Chassis. Additionally, the original Argosy motorhomes had steel front and rear roof end caps vs the aluminum fanned and riveted panels that were used on newer Airstream models.

In 1979 the Argosy name (the nameplate that Airstream used for their successful test into the motorhome market) was dropped, and the new motorhome line revealed the first of their classic unpainted aluminum body motorhomes baring the Airstream name plate.

Argosy Motorhome VIN Decoder

Argosy motorhomes have two vehicle identification numbers on them:

1) The Chevrolet chassis VIN is located in the engine compartment. Open the front hood and the Chevy chassis VIN should be at about eye level. Here is a link to the Chevy Chassis VIN Decoder. Note: The Chevy chassis year is often one year ahead of the coach model year.

2) The Argosy motorhome serial number is usually on the side of the dashboard. To see it, stand outside the coach by the driver's side window and look on the side of the dashboard. The number can also be found behind the front engine access cover either stamped directly on one of the steel posts running vertically on each side of the radiator or on a plate riveted to the post (normally the roadside post).

Argosy Motorhome Serial Numbers follow this format: M28A8V1234, broken down as follows: M-28-A-8-V-1234

  • M = Motorhome
  • 28 = Length (20, 24, 26, or 28)
  • A = Floor Plan Layout
    • A = Center bath twin beds
    • B = Center bath double bed
    • D = Rear bath double bed
    • T = Rear bath twin beds
  • 8 = Year (last digit or 1978)
  • V = Production Facility
    • J = Jackson Center, OH
    • S = Cerritos, CA
